Title
Beyond geovisualization.
Abstract
Everyday, each of us makes many decisions based on geographic information. Often we do this without realizing it, such as when we are walking through a building or following instructions from a voice driven car navigation system. However, when these decisions have a larger impact on our daily lives, we need visual support to comprehend the effects of our decisions. The International Cartographic Association's Commission on Visualization and Virtual Reality examines these types of issues and takes a fresh approach to mapping. Maps offer interaction with the data behind the visual representation and act as instruments that encourage exploration. As such, they stimulate (visual) thinking about geospatial patterns, relationships, and trends. This article discusses these new activities in geovisualization research.
