Nowadays, electronic mail is a well known means for communication. Existing systems allow for the exchange of text documents, to which sometimes graphics and voice annotation can be added. However, no standards exist which support the submission and delivery of multimedia documents in a heterogeneous multivendor environment. To overcome these deficiencies, some projects focus on the specification and development of a prototype Multimedia Mail Service. This paper presents the main results from the development of a Multimedia Mail Service (MMMS) within the CIO (Co-ordination, Implementation and Operation of Multimedia Services) RACE-2060 initiative. |
