This paper presents an overview of a system of software tools that can be used in preparing database designs. The design technique is based on the Entity-Relationship model - the tools allow a designer to conveniently develop an Entity-Relationship model, from which an Extended Entity-Relationship model is produced. The extended Entity-Relationship model is used as input to tools that generate the basic design appropriate to the target database management system. This paper reports on only the tools to generate an IMS design from the extended Entity-Relationship model. |
