Title
Providing Mobile LAN Access Capability for Bluetooth Devices
Abstract
In this paper, we design and implement a Bluetoothsystem with mobile LAN access capability. First, byadding a virtual network interface card (NIC) driverbetween IP and Bluetooth protocol stack, Bluetooth userscan use their Bluetooth devices to access the LANresources via the Bluetooth access points. Besides, toaccommodate with the mobility characteristics inBluetooth network, we also propose a new handoffscheme. Instead of passively waiting for a handoffindication by the expiration of link supervision timer, inthis paper, we detect a handoff actively and promptly bymeasuring the RSSI (Receive Signal Strength Indication)value. In addition, our proposed handoff schemeeliminates the inquiry procedure and only requires pagingprocedure during a handoff. We have implemented aprototype of Bluetooth system with mobile LAN accesscapability by our proposed scheme. Experimented resultsshow that the handoff duration is significant reduced thanthe normal scheme.
