•We extract the maxima of spherical functions using a novel polynomial system solver.•Spherical functions are used to represent tissue microstructure in diffusion MRI.•The polynomial solver automatically brackets all the extrema analytically.•Thus the solver misses no extrema and can achieve high precision.•The extrema are classified and the maxima segregated. |
