The right to a free public education for children with disabilities has been guaranteed by federal law in the U.S. since 1975. Implementation has evolved from separate classes and schools to a model in which children with disabilities are included in regular classrooms. Related services providers (physical occupational and speech therapists) have moved to a consultative model. Collaborative practice between teacher and therapist, using a selection of educational hardware and software, can "level the playing field" for these children. Building on shared knowledge, software should be chosen that: provides consistent perceptual cues; minimises physiological and cognitive deficits; provides educationally equivalent activities; and provides opportunities for collaborative learning. This paper discusses these criteria, and identifies software that meets them. |
