Non-lexical speech sounds (conversational grunts), such asuh-huh, un-hn, mm, and oh, are common in English. Inhuman dialogs these sounds are important in conversationcontrol and for conveying attitudes. Spoken dialog systemsmay make use of these sounds to achieve concise, smooth, relaxed interactions. Doing so is, however, a challenge, becausemost algorithms used in spoken language processingwere devised for words, but grunts are different from wordsboth phonetically and semantically.... |
