Title
Modeling and Simulation of Mixed Queueing and Loss Systems
Abstract
In this paper, we investigate a multi-rate network in whichwide-bandcalls are allowed to wait if insufficient resources are availableatthe time of the call arrival. On the link level, ananalytical model ispresented and simulations have been carried out on the networklevel. The results indicate that allowing a few wide-band callstoqueue can give a significant improvement in performance in termsofnetwork revenue , as well as a means to level out the blockingprobabilities of the different traffic classes. This improvementbecomes significant when the service discipline of the waitingcalls(of different bandwidth requirements) is adaptive in thesense thatlonger queues get served first. This observation motivates theinvestigation of the impact of various buffer spaceassignment andqueueing disciplines on network revenue and call blockingprobabilities. The study of such mixed delay and queueingnetworks ismotivated by its possible applications to traffic problems infuture Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks as well asin multi-rate cellular radio networks.
