Title
Interfacing a Multiprocessor Protocol Engine to an ATM Network
Abstract
We describe a workstation interface to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network physical layer. This device presents a simple memory-mapped interface to a Multiprocessor Protocol Engine, performs all lower-level protocol processing chores in dedicated hardware, and operates with any division of higher-level proto col processing across any number of individual processors. The ability to function with multiple processors requires particular approaches to interface communication. We have taken care to precisely control bandwidth assigned to each open connection. We have designed the interface to handle errored cells in a consistent and efficient manner. We present results which show that the interface will support full ATM STS-3c bandwidth utilization in a system which can supply and consume information at that speed.
