Title
On the Traffic Disruption Time and Packet Lost Rate during the Handover Mechanisms in Wireless Networks
Abstract
Personal Communication Systems (PCS) aim toprovide ubiquitos service to its subscribers. In order tofulfil the ubiquity requirement for services, PCS rely ontwo main features: use of wireless communicationstechnology and mobility management. The former sets thebasis to untie subscribers from a wire allowing them tofreely move around. The later allows subscribers to gainaccess to the network services at all times regardless oftheir location.A handover is the process used to allow acall in progress to continue as the associated subscribermoves around.A large number of handover mechanisms have beenreported in the literature. In this article, we carry out a comprehensive performance study of the handovermechanisms as proposed in the literature.A detailedsimulation model has been developed allowing us to setup parameters such as the speed and motion path of themobile terminal. The performance metrics of interest are:the length of the disruption time caused by the handovermechanism and the number of lost packets caused by thehandover mechanism.Under the scenario underconsideration, the Handovers using Multicastingmechanism and Full Re-establishment mechanism exhibitthe best results.
