The concept of micro-sensing and wireless connection of sensor nodes promises many new application areas. Wireless sensor networks have the potential to revolutionize the way we observe, interact with and influence the physical world. So far, mainstream research has been carried out in a bottom-up fashion, based on a layered approach. There are gaps between application requirements, processing algorithms, and networking mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to propose a cross-layer optimization architecture that can bridge the gap between the technologies for modeling, processing and networking in a top-down fashion. Key research issues are identified in each area. |
