Numerically Controlled Oscillators (NCOs), with a hybrid scheme of both lookup tables (LUT) and CORDIC algorithms for a hardware efficient, high performance sine/cosine function generation are investigated. This scheme combines (i) fast access and power efficiency of reasonably sized LUTs and (ii) arbitrary precision obtainable from a rigorous iteration algorithm. Systematic studies using hardware description language (HDL) models and synthesis lead to optimum LUT/CORDIC ratios, which minimize power consumption and silicon area for a given operating clock frequency. In this paper, we show, how such complex arithmetic functionalities may be modeled using the hardware description language VHDL and how the arithmetic packages of this standardized language (IEEE 1076) may be employed to verify the accuracy targets of the complete design. |
