•An information theoretic framework to quantify semantic correlations is presented.•This is used to measure the disclosure risk of correlated terms in document sanitization.•An efficient algorithm providing a practical implementation of the framework is provided.•Evaluation results show a significant decrease of disclosure risk against standard sanitizers. |
