Video data is usually voluminous and it is desirable that one be able to get a quick idea of the content before actually watching a video or downloading it from the web. In this paper, we present a video summarization algorithm that works in the compressed domain, in particular MPEG videos. The algorithm is based on an existing one used in the uncompressed domain. To adapt it for MPEG videos, we make use of a feature known as DC histogram that can be extracted from MPEG videos without fill decompression. A video summarizer based on our algorithm is implemented and experiments are conducted to examine its effectiveness. Results show that the summarizer performs quite well to user expectations. |
