We present a study of complex visualization usage by expert meteorologicalforecasters. We performed a protocol analysis and examined the types ofvisualizations they examined. We present evidence for how experts are ableto make use of complex visualizations. Our #ndings suggest that users ofcomplex visualizations create qualitativemental models from which they canthen generate quantitative information.
