Title
Embedded Systems For Signing Medical Images Using The Dicom Standard
Abstract
The DICOM standard allows adding digital signatures to all possible DICOM objects such as images, waveforms, or structured reports. Digital signatures provide a mechanism to confirm the authentication and integrity of a DICOM object. Until new modalities supporting the new standard for signing DICOM objects like images become available, a solution is needed to support digital signatures for modalities which are currently in use. In order to create a DICOM signer, we used an embedded computer system that has enough power to perform the cryptographic algorithms specified in the DICOM standard. We decided to use the programming language Java, because Java is offering us the option to change the hardware without having to change the implementation of our software. This benefit is offered since for many platforms a Java runtime environment is available. The presented solution shows an embedded system which offers signing images of a DICOM modality, which currently not supports the DICOM Standard, for less than US$1000.
