The multi-modal information presentation integratedinto the virtual environments can stimulate differentsenses, increase the user's sense of immersion, and theamount of information accepted and processed by theuser. The increase of information may reduce the errorand time taken to complete a task. This paper presentsour approach for integrating 3D sound into virtualassembly environment for the investigation of the effect ofvisual and 3D sound feedback on assembly task-performancein virtual environments. A responsiveworkbench-based experimental platform that bringstogether technologies such as constraint-based assemblysimulation, ultrasonic tracking, and 3D sound generationhas been set-up. Several experiments are being conductedto explore and evaluate the effect of neutral, visual, auditory and integrated feedback mechanism on the senseof presence and task performance in the context ofassembly simulation in virtual environment. |
