This paper describes a type-II fuzzy programming method for municipal solid waste management under uncertainty membership functions. This type-II fuzzy sets parameter model allows uncertain information, presented either as single fuzzy sets or type-II fuzzy sets, to communicate with the optimization framework effectively. Thus, authorities of waste management faced with conflicting requirements of environmental objectives and limited funding are able to yield optimal decisions. This study is the first of its kind to apply type-II fuzzy algorithm for solving solid waste management. The results of a hypothesis case study show that useful solutions for planning solid waste management can be obtained. The model also shows the tradeoffs between different environmental and economic objectives. © 2011 IEEE. |
