Prediction of the Coronary Heart Disease Using Neural Network Based Model
Abstract
The main objective of this research paper is develop an expert system module, based on an artificial neural networks (ANNs), back propagation feed forward technique, for the diagnosis of the coronary heart disease, and compare its performance with other existing computer based decision support systems. The ANN based system is developed with the commercially available software package (Brain Maker, California scientfic Software). Two different types of ANN models, unsupervised and supervised, are developed, compared, and tested. The predictive accuracy and the model training for the supervised model is significantly better. The model is able to predict the coronary heart disease in patients accurately, however performance is not significantly better than the other existing model based techniques. Further investigations are needed to understand the impact of this methodology on the outcome analysis. An existing database of 190 infected and 100 normal individual wereutilized. Dichotomous variables were coded as present (1) or not present (0). Contnuous variable were recorded for the patient age, ethnicity, cholesterol level, blood pressure, maximum heart rate, ST segment value and number of major blocked arteries The results have been very interesting, however, some further research work is required to fine-tune the results. The main advantage of the developed system is that it is that it is self adaptive type and works well in the noisy data environment.
