HiperLAN (HIgh PErformance Radio Local Area Network) Type 2 is a new standard from ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) for high-speed wireless LANs, interconnecting portable devices to broadband core networks based on different networking technologies such as IP, ATM, UMTS, and others. This paper carries out a performance evaluation of the MAC protocol operating within a HiperLAN/2 system. Specifically, the paper focuses on the mechanisms provided by HiperLAN/2 to manage bandwidth resource request/granting and scheduling, in order to assess their flexibility and efficiency in supporting delay sensitive (voice) and computer data traffic of a bursty nature (Web traffic). |
