Title
Still picture compression based on psychovisual image-pattern coding
Abstract
In this paper, an approach that integrates different compression techniques is presented. The goal is to reach high compression rates for still pictures without introducing relevant visual distortions in the images. This is obtained by using a "second generation" compression scheme which adaptively uses different psychovisual techniques to reduce the image bitrate. Each image is analysed on a block by block basis and the most appropriate coding strategy is selected according to the characteristics of the current block and of surrounding blocks. Taking into account surrounding blocks leads to improved visual image quality. Another important feature of the proposed approach is that part of the approximation job is done at the receiver thus further reducing the bit rte needed for transmission.
