In this paper a system for the 3D documentation of a scene within an absolute coordinate system is presented. It follows the idea of structure-from- motion and was designed to fit well into the standard archaeological documentation process. It only requires equipment that is already present at an excavation site, namely a digital camera and a total station. Besides that, data that is surveyed during the archaeological documentation process is reused to transform the model into the geo-referenced coordinate system used at the site. The paper discusses possible sources of error that influence the accuracy of reconstructed models in general. The achieved measuring accuracies are evaluated on synthetic as well as real data. |
