Title
Ethically Situated Information Systems Development
Abstract
An understanding of a problem situation is typically described as the starting point for the information system development process. Methodologies differ in the perspective used to view the situation. Technically oriented methodologies tend to view the organization metaphorically as a machine that call be fixed through the application of tools. Organizationally oriented methodologies work to expose and reveal the cultural, political, and social dimensions, recognizing in new implementations of information systems (IS) a potent change factor in these human dimensions. A deeper understanding of the human dimensions can be obtained by analyzing the ethical perspectives of the actors in the situation and the ethical dilemmas faced by the actors, defined in this case to include the analyst (or analysis team) as well.
