Title
Participatory design and evaluation of e-learning system for Korean language training
Abstract
E-learning refers to the use of telecommunication technology to deliver information for education with a broad array of solutions. In the information age, the central concept of education has switched from teacher-centered to learner-centered education. Many studies proved the advantages of implementing teaching methods to the web environment and the significant performance improvement of the learners. In this study, a web-based Korean language learning system was developed and evaluated in terms of usability. Actual users involved the development, and evaluation phases. Initially, existing web sites for Korean language learning were analyzed by the users. The user study was then conducted by employing seven participants to identify users' preferences and needs. An affinity diagram was generated as a result of the user study. Design principles and final contents were determined based on the user requirement analysis. The prototype was tested initially by Nielsen's heuristic evaluation metrics with four usability experts, and then the actual users with ISO 9241 standards. User reactions were observed, and recorded while performing with the system. Subjective usability of the system was analyzed by a survey. Finally, an exam was conducted to sixteen users to compare the performances of the users who studied Korean language with our e-learning system and a regular textbook for a one-week long period. It is proven that participatory development is useful and effective for language learning.
