Title
Cell Delay Variation in a FIFO Queue: A Diffusion Approach
Abstract
This paper considers cell delay variation induced on a constant bit rate (CBR) cell stream in an ATM multiplexer in which the CBR traffic is mixed with Poisson traffic. It is illustrated how the application of a diffusion formula makes closed form expression of most time dependent quantities of interest possible. This includes the inter exit time distribution, the index of dispersion for intervals and the probability of a given number of cell arrivals in a window. The convergence rate of the time dependent inter exit distribution towards its limit is also worked out. Finally, the complexity in the dimensioning of the leaky bucket based on the Benes result is significantly reduced.
