Based on a hypothesis about the future of multimedia markets, the ACTS Integrated Multimedia Project (IMMP) set up a multimedia system model, which would be realisable during the lifetime of the project. Due to the constrains imposed by the markets, the application life cycle and that of the transport network differ greatly. Based on this fact a separation of components into Application and Bearer Network with separate service control and management functions is suggested. This separation is based on principles and requirements, taking into account the technology currently available, future application demands as well as standardisation efforts with the aim to conduct user trials. The field trials presented are an implementation of a high speed Internet access and a Video on Demand service system. |
