This paper introduces a part of a research project, the concern of which was to move file management functions to an intelligent disk controller. This provides an interface to design a filter processor which supports pattern matching by special hardware and thus allows performance speed-up in non-standard applications such as office automation and knowledge base systems or engineering data processing. After some remarks concerning the state of the art and dedicated basic considerations, the design and implementation of the filter processor is described in details. |
