This study presents how heuristic optimization technologies coupled with modeling and simulation (M&S) can be used to strengthen engineering system analysis in complex industrial settings. In this analysis, we address the warehouse order-picking process, one of the most labor intense activities in the supply chain. An understanding of the impact of the simultaneous effects of customer demands as well as the products and their storage is essential for improving the operational performance. We used a heuristic optimization to obtain an optimal layout that considers the dynamics of the demand. At the same time, we used M&S to investigate the effects of creating and implementing weight zones. Results from combining layout optimization and zone simulation indicate significant opportunities for improving. |
