Abstract
•We propose two rankings of normalization procedures using for evaluation purposes the two classification systems on which depend.•In the empirical part, we use four classification systems, four mean citation normalization procedures, and a large Thomson Reuters dataset.•Since the two rankings are independent from each other, they can be used in a complementary fashion.•The evaluation using an independent classification system proves to be useful in a variety of situations.
