On the 7th of December 2007, the 146,000-ton oil tanker, Hebei Spirit, was wrecked and leaked more than 10,000 ton crude oil onto the sea off the west coast of the South Korea. In this paper, the monitoring of the oil spills in this pollution accident using multi-temporal Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and microwave scatterometer (QSCAT and ASCAT) data was illustrated. The impact of this oil spill pollution on the China's marine environment was evaluated. The result shows the capability and the effectiveness of microwave remote sensing data in oil spill monitoring and forecasting. |
