Title
Traffic Analysis Of Trans-Atlantic Traffic
Abstract
This paper analyses the international IP traffic generated from the UK academic community to the US and the rest of the world, along with some from European countries to the US. Five million packets were captured in August 1991, and analysed to produce aggregate statistics on the pattern of protocol usage. These statistics are compared against similar statistics that were gathered in March 1991. The paper describes the results of traffic monitoring and analysis carried out on 21st August 1991 at the University of London Computing Centre (ULCC). The data includes all traffic that passed along the UK-US academic network link. with the exception noted below, as well as some traffic between the US and UK academic networks and sites in Europe. This work builds on a previous analysis of traffic at this site1, and aims to draw a comparison with these earlier results to demonstrate some effects of network topology changes and growth.
