Title
On Implementing the Data Warehouse - GIS Integration
Abstract
This article describes the implementation aspects of geographic information systems interconnection with data warehouses. Geographic information systems are enriched by the functionality of the on-line analytical processing engine. Their graphical user interface is used as a front-end for decision support. Communication objects reside in the system kernel, which is extendable by specific drivers. The approach is tested with real-life applications using commercial systems. Extensible Markup Language was selected as the means for data transfer. The use of modem technologies like Component Object Model, Office Web Components (PivotTable Service) and ActiveX Data Objects supported rapid prototyping of this software component. End users can use a broad variety of front-end tools to manipulate and analyze the geographical and dimensional data. The approach is applied to the two pilot projects - Drinking Water Distribution System in Western Bohemia and Monument Protection Application: tracking of historical monuments' visitor profiles.
