Performing Security Analysis of Large Scale Power Systems with a Broker-based Computational Grid
Abstract
In this paper a solution to the on-line power systemsecurity analysis is presented. For complex networks thisanalysis requires large computational efforts whereascomputation times should be less than few minutes for theinformation to be useful. Even though many architecturesbased on conventional parallel and distributed systemshave been proposed in literature, none of them is able tofurnish useful results for large electrical networks. Toaddress this problem in the paper a distributed Web-basedarchitecture integrating a hierarchical grid systemis proposed to implement a computational engine able toexecute the power system state equations for largeelectrical networks. The grid system adopts a resourcebroker to satisfy the quality of service constraintsspecified by the user. The resulting framework, deployedon a network of heterogeneous clusters and PCs, is usedto compute the contingencies analysis of a realisticelectrical grid. The experimental results demonstrate thaton-line security analysis can be executed in few minuteseven for large network complexity.
