Title
Capturing mini brand using a parametric shape grammar
Abstract
Enterprises strive to survive in competitive consumer markets and seek means to meet consumer demands cost effectively. From this aspect, generative design methods such as shape grammars are being investigated and explored with the aim to support enterprises and their designers in creating new products that meet consumers' demands and aspirations. Shape grammars have been used to visually generate branded consumer products. However, existing shape grammars tend to use simple basic shapes and are not well-suited to the complex shapes that typify many branded consumer products. With the introduction of the parametric shape grammars, the applicability of shape grammars improves for branded consumer product. In this paper, an adapted parametric shape grammar is applied to capture the evolution of Mini brand automobiles. The investigation carried out was focused on the front view designs of the Mini automobiles from different time periods. The information collected from this study will provide the basis to support the implementation of a computerised generative design system.
