An architectural framework for context sensitive personalization: standardization work at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) |

As communication systems and technology become more advanced and complex, it will be increasingly important to focus on users' individual needs. For most devices and services there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution that allows people to derive maximum benefit and ease of use. Instead, there is a need for people to have services and devices that can be personalized to their individual needs. Personalization of services and devices is a key success factor for achieving services that are optimized for a range of situations (e.g. "On the move", "At a meeting", "At home"). Behind every instance of personalization there is a "user profile" that stores details of the user, their preferences, context of use and other information that can be used to deliver a user experience tailored to their individual preferences. This paper describes the standardization work at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), developing an architectural framework for user profile management. It explains a solution for context sensitive automatic activation of user profiles, while still providing the user with the option to activate profiles manually. |
