An architectural framework for context sensitive personalization: standardization work at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)
Abstract
As communication systems and technology become more advanced and complex, it will be increasingly important to focus on users' individual needs. For most devices and services there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution that allows people to derive maximum benefit and ease of use. Instead, there is a need for people to have services and devices that can be personalized to their individual needs. Personalization of services and devices is a key success factor for achieving services that are optimized for a range of situations (e.g. "On the move", "At a meeting", "At home"). Behind every instance of personalization there is a "user profile" that stores details of the user, their preferences, context of use and other information that can be used to deliver a user experience tailored to their individual preferences. This paper describes the standardization work at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), developing an architectural framework for user profile management. It explains a solution for context sensitive automatic activation of user profiles, while still providing the user with the option to activate profiles manually.
