In real space we may move closer, or glance at someone to express our willingness for conversation. The act of approaching someone is accompanied by ancillary information such as the sound of footsteps, or air movement, which the potential conversation partner can detect, but may easily ignore. We call this "soft initiation". To include such ancillary cues in virtual space, we provide the sense of physically crossing paths, by fitting a vibrating device on the participants' bodies. This is an extension of the "HyperMirror" video communication system in which participants see each other as though present in the same space together. |
