•The spectral variability and separability of the rock types were experimentally examined.•The effect of spectral variability on lithological mapping with the SAM using a mean reference spectrum were analyzed.•Two methods of selecting reference spectra used in SAM are proposed for lithological mapping.•The proposed methods improved lithological mapping by reducing and accommodating spectral variability. |
