Title
Multitemporal evaluation with ASAR of boreal forests
Abstract
RADARSAT-2 will provide fully polarimetric C-band data of Canada's forests. A project is being conducted to determine the effectiveness of the polarimetric data for forest typing, structure, and disturbance mapping. Envisat ASAR precision images with alternating polarization mode [I] were collected to simulate one of the RADARSAT-2 data modes. The ASAR images were geometrically and radiometrically corrected. Two fused HH/HV/VV/VH polarimetric data sets were created one for the winter of 2004 and one for the summer of 2004. A hierarchical logistic classifier, LOGIT [2], was used to classify the multitemporal and multi-polarization ASAR imagery. The backscatter characteristics of different forest cover, clear-cuts, and forest regeneration were examined and classification comparisons were made between the fused data sets. This paper reports on these experiments and the methodology for using multitemporal and multi-polarization SAR in northern forest environments. It is expected that our methods will assist the operational use of RADARSAT-2 data to forest practitioners in Canada.
