Title
Demonstrating Real-Time Reconfiguration of Video Sensing Service-Oriented Applications
Abstract
The Service-Oriented (SO) paradigm has been widely adopted in the development of distributed applications in open and complex environments due to its inherent flexibility, modularity, ease of code reuse and deployment, among other properties. According to this paradigm, different functionalities are encapsulated in services, which are self-contained re-locatable software entities that can be discovered and communicate among each other through messages. Applications can be composed by arranging services in a desired sequence according to an a cyclic directed graph. The benefits of the SO paradigm have motivated its use in diverse application domains, including real-time systems [1]. However, its potential is revealed mainly in open systems in which services can be added, updated or removed on-line, so as the applications that use them. In such scenario, applications will need to be (re) composed on-line, too. This is challenging particularly for SO real-time systems for which the reconfiguration must be carried out not only on-line but also within bounded time. However, among the relatively large amount of work in SO architectures and on-line composition, few works address timing constraints in dynamic reconfiguration. A recent work showed the feasibility of such challenge when using real-time operating systems and networks [2] and the iLAND project was setup to follow this line of research [3]. This demonstration will exhibit a few simple video sensing applications developed with the iLAND middleware, exploring its dynamic services recomposition. In particular it highlights the fast reconfiguration capabilities of the middleware when running on top of the FTT-SE protocol [4][5] and Linux-based nodes with the real-time patch (kernel 2.6.33).
