This paper describes a support system approach to a constraint satisfaction/optimization problem of the academic course scheduling problem. In general, course schedules are generated manually, using course information such as class titles, summaries and categories given by teachers. However, it is not easy for students to generate manually a course schedule from a large number of combination of classes, due to various constraints and/or criteria. We developed a system that generates course schedules automatically, using spreading activation on a course network, where the problem is formalized as a constraint satisfaction/ optimization problem. We describe the use of the model to schedule in our university. The best results were obtained using spreading activation model in evaluation test. |
