Title
On ESTheta Theory and the Logic of the X12 Date/Time Qualifiers
Abstract
Progress has been substantial in research on developing a general-purpose formal language for business communication (FLBC). Key distinctions have been made, important concepts identified, impressive prototypes implemented. The purpose of this paper is to present some data pertaining to the logical analysis---and structuring---of messages in electronic commerce. To this end, the paper reports on an analysis of 101 date/time qualifiers from the X12 EDI standards. It is found that ESTheta (event semantics + thematic roles) theory, when extended and modified slightly, is able to provide a plausible semantics for the X12 date/time codes. This augers well for the general FLBC program.
