The "semantic web" promises a new generation of web services delivery applications enabled by semantic mark-up of web resources, shared ontologies and highly-intelligent agents. The vision is astounding and the potential benefits enormous. However, previous experience with information systems and database integration initiatives would suggest that a degree of caution is warranted. It is also argued that lessons might be gleaned from these intra-organisational integration projects that might be of considerable value in developing and implementing semantic web applications. |
