This study compared two different ways of learning conflicting information, reading and discussion. College students were surveyed on their views on dam construction, and then learned about a view opposed to their own either by individually studying a text or by discussing the topic with another student. Students in the discussion condition never had a chance to read the opposing text itself and had to learn it from their partner through the discussion. Nonetheless, their performance was comparable to the performance of the students in the individual reading condition who actually read the text. More students changed their belief after discussion than after reading the text. These preliminary results suggest that discussion can be as effective as reading in learning conflicting information, but the process of learning might be different in the two conditions. |
