Title
Generation Of 3-D Solid Model From 3dx Multi-Image Micro-Ct (Methods And Application)
Abstract
Object: A clinical model of limited cone beam X-ray CT for dental use (3DX multi-image micro-CT) was developed by Arai et al. in 2000 [Dental Radiology 40 (2000) 145]. In this paper, we present a series of continuous processing methods for constructing the three-dimensional solid model from the projection data, which contain much noise, obtained from 3DX. Method: First, the temporomandibular joint of the human body is scanned by 3DX. Because this X-ray irradiation is maintained at a low level, the data includes noise interference. Noise was eliminated according to the image processing method proposed by Befu et al. [A study in three-dimensional image processing method for 3DX multi-image micro-CT, In: Car'01 Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, Elsevier, Berlin, pp. 665-670 (2001)] and three-dimensional images were constructed. Next, the constructed three-dimensional image data is cut out in 112 pieces of two-dimensional images at an interval of 0.25 mm. Finally, the outline obtained from the temporomandibular joint two-dimensional images is transformed into HP-GL form. The photofabricated model data was transferred using the Internet to the model fabricator. Result: It is shown that the three-dimensional solid model, which is applicable for dental treatment, is obtained by the proposal method. Conclusion: We proposed a series of processing methods for constructing a three-dimensional solid model from the three-dimensional projection data obtained from 3DX. As a result, it became possible to construct the three-dimensional solid model semi-automatically from 3DX data. The model is widely applicable in dentistry following the proposed procedure.
