Title
Design and implementation of a distributed underwater acoustic communication network simulator based on CORBA middleware and a software-defined MODEM
Abstract
Underwater communication network simulators play a very important role in underwater network research due to the cost of field experiments. Several simulators have been proposed for tackling this problem in past years, such as Aqua, UAN, DESERT and SUNSET. These simulators do not include real physical layers; they are all based on the data package. In practice, the performance of networks deeply depends on the physical layer and the underwater channel. In this paper, we propose a new underwater network simulator, which can perform a large scale distributed simulation over several computers based on a CORBA (Common Object Request Broker) middleware. It allows modulation and demodulation operations to be performed based on a Software-Defined MC-MFSK MODEM. It also allows for synthesizing a received signal based on the Bellhop ray tracing channel model. A demonstration shows that our simulator has the potential ability for a more accurate evaluation of underwater acoustic network performance.
