In this paper, we discuss how spoken dialogue systems technology, key factor for user-friendly human-computer interaction, can be deployed in intelligent environments (IEs). An IE is a physical space augmented with computation, communication and digital content. In particular, we show how a spoken dialogue management component may be integrated in Adaptive and Trusted Ambient Ecologies (ATRACO), one realization of next generation intelligent environments. ATRACO is a EU-funded FET/ICT 7th Framework Programme project. We provide an overview on the ATRACO architecture and its interleaving with the spoken dialogue manager, called OwlSpeak. Several conversational phenomena that are explicitly important within the application domain are introduced and provide a detailed look of OwlSpeak's capabilities. |
