Title
A Transatlantic Research and Development Environment
Abstract
Our world is now entering an age where our current understanding of telecommunications and graphics computing will be challenged constantly. A current instance is the universal advance of network and graphics technology, new business models, and global infrastructure development that are transforming the solitary, platform-centric model of 3D computing. With the availability of global information highways it is now likely that intercontinental collaboration using 3D graphics will become a common ingredient of daily work. Already, world-class auto makers are attempting to reduce car development time to two-year cycles. Global engineering teams have been enlisted to make this happen. However, new tools such as shared 3D CAD and distributed product data management systems are required to enable this process. Our organizations, the Fraunhofer Center for Research in Computer Graphics (CRCG) in the United States and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics (IGD) in Germany, are aiming to look ahead into this new age by establishing a computer graphics research effort that spans continents. CRCG and IGD are studying the role of 3D computer graphics and virtual environments in the context of global collaborative work.
