•We employed seasonal time series analyses for accurately identifying and characterizing main crop types and grassland.•A field-parcel based method was developed jointly exploiting high resolution and medium resolution optical imagery.•The concept demonstrates the realisation of a robust multi-sensor, multi-scale and multi-seasonal classification system. |
