Title
An Application of Efficient Certificate Status Handling Methods to High Traffic Authentication Services
Abstract
Many organizations show a strong interest in digitalsignature technology as a mean for secure andauthenticated document exchange, hoping it will helpreducing paper-based transactions. The main problemposed by this technology is with the necessary public-keyinfrastructure, and in particular with certificate statushandling. Rather than addressing the revocation problemin general, a specific but interesting aspect is discussedhere: secure identification of a large number of users(like citizens for a public administration) accessing awide pool of services. This paper describes the definitionand deployment of a web-based environment suitable foroffering administrative services to citizens and foraccepting authenticated documents from citizens. The bestfeatures of two different certificate status handlingschemes, the standard CRL and a novel on-line scheme, have been exploited within this environment to obtain agood balance between security, timeliness and efficiency.
