Abstract-The diversified nature offault-tolerant computers led tothedevelopment ofamultiplicity ofreliability models which are seemingly unrelated toeachother. Asaresult, itbecomes difficult to develop automated tools forreliability analysis which arebothgeneral andefficient. Thus, thepotential ofreliability modeling asapractical anduseful tool inthedesign process offault-tolerant computers has notbeenfully realized. Thispaper summarizes theresults ofanex- tended effort todevelop aunified approach toreliability modeling of fault-tolerant computers which strikes agoodcompromise between generality andpracticality. Theunified model developed encompasses repairable andnonrepairable systems andmodels, transient aswell aspermanent faults, andtheir recovery. Basedontheunified model, apowerful andefficient reliability estimation program ARIEShasbeen developed. IndexTerms-Computer reliability, fault tolerance, graceful |
